The LAK Hackathon is a pre-conference workshop of the 9th International Learning Analytics and Knowledge Conference (LAK’19), taking place on March 4-5, 2019 in Tempe, Arizona, United States.
The LAK Hackathon 2019 is the fifth in the series of Hackathons held at LAK. The theme of 2019 is Trusted and Inclusive Learning Analytics Across Spaces with New Tools, Standards and Infrastructures.
Please feel free to bring along your research questions, datasets and methodologies to the workshop for incorporation in the multidisciplinary activities. If you would like to suggest open research questions that you think should be addressed at the event, then come along prepared to pitch your idea.
However, you don’t have to submit a proposal in order to participate! In addition, this Hackathon is not just for techies. If you are interested in education, whether as a teacher, instructor, learning technologist or instructional designer, this is the chance to gain better insight into learning analytics!
Format of the Event
We have historically scheduled this inclusive, open workshop over two days. For the first half day, there is a period of stocktaking, orienting, and introducing participants to the core themes such as how to interact with the data and the tools. We then divide into teams of 6-8 people to fulfil specific missions. Focussing on team-building from the very start, we place the participants at the centre of activity, evolving the schedule based on their iterative feedback cycles and expressed objectives. At the end of the first day we discuss progress, lessons learned and next steps. At the end of the second day, we summarise and plan future follow-on actions.
To strengthen the linkage of the LAK Hackathon with the other workshops and research communities, this year we want to allow one-day participation to the hackathon. This setup is, for example, useful in the case of the of the multimodal learning analytics group, which traditionally organises a parallel one-day workshop. The LAK Hackathon 2019 wants to become the space for hands-on technical challenges, which takes place in parallel to the work of the LAK sub-communities and offers them the means to address practical challenges.
In line with the previous session, the LAK hackathon will host pre-hackathon events such as the Learning & Student Analytics Conference in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (24-25th October 2018); and a student facing LA challenge at UTC:CIC in Sydney. The pre-hackathons involve local participants and students bringing fresh ideas to the resolution of the learning analytics challenges. We are investigating new ways to feed the results of pre-hackathons into the main Hackathon event, with code bases and results seeding challenges for the LAKHackathon.
